Richard Branscombe of Swainsford Heavy Horses

Richard transported a hay wagon and an amazing black Percheron heavy horse, from Mere to Frome St Quinton.

He also taught two of the students how to plough a field using 19th Century horse and plough. This scene was filmed at the Wessex Heavy Horse Society.

Durdle Door

The unique limestone arch of Durdle Door provided us with an outstanding beautiful and atmospheric location; helping to capture Thomas Hardy's Wessex.

Gold Hill, Shaftesbury

An old favourite, but a unique glimpse of Dorset as it was. We attracted many curious onlookers, some of whom had their picture taken with Sergeant Troy and his best man.

Sturminster Newton Mill

Sturminster Newton, once the home to Thomas Hardy, provided us with its Mill. The River Stour was ever present whilst we were shooting both inside the mill itself and within its immediate surrounding area. Look out for the Mill in actual use.

Holnest and Stinsford churches

We're enormously grateful to Holnest and Stinsford parishs for allowing us to film inside these two lovely churches. Stinsford church was, of course, Thomas Hardys local church at the time.
